5 April 2016 – Hyundai Motor Group has presented its roadmap for connected car development, paving the way for new innovations in vehicle connectivity. Hyundai Motor Group will collaborate with leading global IT and networking companies to develop its ‘Hyper-connected and Intelligent Car’ concept, with research and development focused on bringing new values and efficiencies to the lives of customers.
Along with the roadmap, Hyundai Motor Group plans to embark on a new era of connecting the ‘Car to Life’, as cars are increasingly at the centre of our lifestyles. This initiative will provide users with a hub of infinite knowledge, plus the ability to analyse and utilise all information to enhance owner’s lives. The ‘Hyper-connected and Intelligent Car’ goes beyond converging communications technology and the vehicle to become a ‘High-Performing Computer on Wheels’. This is a concept of connecting the car to other cars, the office and to the city. In other words, Hyundai will connect cars to life.
The roadmap outlines four main service fields that will help develop smarter, more intelligent cars that can receive and utilize data faster than ever before. The mid- to long- term development focus includes a range of key features, including: smart remote maintenance services, autonomous driving, Smart Traffic and a connected Mobility Hub that provides security and data management for all elements of the connected car.
More specifically, the smart remote maintenance service will remotely diagnose and fix vehicle issues before they become apparent. Autonomous driving provides utmost safety by connecting a vehicle to city and road infrastructure. Smart Traffic reduces congestion, speeds-up journeys and minimizes social costs by considering traffic and road conditions. Lastly, the connected Mobility Hub will feature a mobile hub with strong computing power to make daily life and interaction with the car and its surroundings smarter.
In the short- to mid-term, Hyundai Motor Group will concentrate on technologies related to smartphone connectivity and Smart Home Services, while establishing the core infrastructure that will provide the foundation for future developments. In order to incorporate increasingly complex features in its roadmap, Hyundai will prioritise early investment in these selected areas.
The main areas of R&D focus include in-vehicle networks for high-speed transfer of large amounts of data, and cloud technology to collect vehicle data and provide computing power. Hyundai will also research big data analytics that will allow large data sets to be used effectively, and it will invest in connected car security, essential for protecting the integrity of a complicated platform hosting varying technologies.
Hyundai Motor Group will bring the future of connected cars closer by co-developing connected car technologies through ‘Open Innovation’ collaborations with global companies. The connected car roadmap will concentrate on industry-leading research and development to foster new talents that will change the way customers interact with their cars and the world around them.
With previous experience in this field, Hyundai Motor Group has already established the Cloud system, which puts the core infrastructure of connected cars into place. Meanwhile, a group of data scientists have helped Hyundai Motor Group to specialise in data analytics since 2013. The company is utilising big data in various areas to enhancing R&D and products, and also gathering customers’ opinions.

Hyundai Motor has unveiled a suite of interactive demonstrations at the 2017 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas as the company presents its vision for future mobility. Advanced autonomous IONIQ models will operate on the surrounding roads, while at the Hyundai Motor booth immersive virtual reality will capture the company’s future vision for visitors.
Autonomous IONIQ models will navigate a series of test routes in the boulevards around CES, using the very latest LiDAR technology (a laser and radar-based detection system) to identify the precise position of surrounding vehicles and objects to navigate the urban landscape safely. At the Hyundai Motor CES booth, Virtual Reality (VR) simulators provide visitors with an immersive experience demonstrating how autonomous driving will bring greater convenience and safety to Hyundai customers.
Moving forward with the use of LiDAR technology, Hyundai Motor has hidden the hardware behind the autonomous IONIQ’s front bumper rather than using the typical roof-mounted approach, retaining the new car’s sleek design. The car’s advanced self-driving systems are kept as simple as possible by integrating existing functions from the production model, including the Smart Cruise Control system’s forward-facing radar and Lane Keeping Assist cameras.
The system also uses a GPS antenna to search for a location of each vehicle and high-definition mapping software delivers pinpoint accuracy for location, road gradient and curvature, plus lane width and indication data. In addition, a Blind Spot Detection radar ensures that even simple lane changes are executed safely.
Hyundai Motor’s latest technology allows the cars to navigate the most challenging situations safely, including high levels of pedestrian traffic, stop lights and signs, road construction and road blocks, speed bumps, dogs, small children and even intersections without traffic signals. Through extensive testing in urban environments Hyundai Motor is continuing to develop and refine its self-driving technologies with the goal of using less computing power, resulting in a low-cost platform that the typical consumer can afford.

Hyundai Motor has unveiled its plans for advanced connected car technology at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas. The interactive experience featured at the Hyundai Motor booth demonstrates how the ‘hyper-connected car’ will be central to buying greater convenience, comfort and enjoyment to tomorrow’s lifestyles.
With an objective to create hyper-connected intelligent cars that boast the safest and most advanced self-driving systems on the market, Hyundai Motor is collaborating with Cisco, a worldwide leader in IT and security technology. The joint program will create a platform optimised for connected cars, which will help enable two-way communication both internally between the car’s system and externally with road infrastructure, other vehicles, internet of Things (loT) devices, and the cloud.

At CES Hyundai Motor presents four key connected car scenarios that will define the experience for its customers:
- Fully Autonomous Driving – guarantees the highest levels of driving safety by monitoring traffic conditions, infrastructure information and data from other vehicles
- Smart Traffic – delivers convenience through optimised route guidance based on real-time traffic information, which can reduce congestion and minimise associated social costs that delays can bring
- Intelligent Remote Service – monitors the car’s condition to identify and resolve issues remotely
- ‘Mobility Hub’ – is the heart of the connected car, which provides assistance and infinite amounts of knowledge to connect customers with every aspect of their daily lives
The connected car platform will evolve to link cars to everything, including homes, offices and even city infrastructure. Through its work with Cisco, Hyundai Motor will aim to have its connected car infrastructure adapt to new innovations in safety, comfort and convenience while encompassing advanced security technologies to aim to reduce hacking vehicle operating systems.
The Hyundai Motor booth at CES presents an interactive experience for visitors by demonstrating all the elements of its future vision for the connected car. 28 December 2016 – Hyundai Motor will showcase its vision for future mobility at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, from 5 to 8 January, 2017. The Hyundai Motor booth is set to host a range of innovative technologies that focus on intelligent autonomous driving and advanced, hyper-connectivity solutions that will link cars to customer’s lives.
Autonomous IONIQ models will operate on test routes in the boulevards around CES, while inside visitors can experience a driverless journey via immersive Virtual Reality simulators. The IONIQ Hybrid on display will reveal enhancements to further its reputation as one of the world’s most fuel-efficient cars, and a new Micro Mobility concept, integrated with the IONIQ Electric, will showcase the future of first- and last-mile mobility.
Hyundai Motor will also present an interactive experience to demonstrate how its hyper-connected car platform, developed with leading global IT company Cisco, will be central to making tomorrow’s lifestyles even more convenient. Other technologies at the Show booth represent Hyundai Motor’s focus on the wellbeing of its customers. The Healthcare Cockpit connects car and driver to boost productivity or relaxation when traveling. Meanwhile, the company’s range of advanced wearable exoskeletons demonstrates Hyundai’s commitment to social responsibility, offering a new freedom of mobility to customers who require physical support for lifting or repetitive work, plus assisting members of society whose mobility is restricted.
