The new Fiat 500 has arrived in Australia, with major interior technology updates and a revised exterior style headlining the 1,800 changes that mark the latest evolution of this iconic vehicle.

Retaining the unmistakable look that has made it a global best-seller with more than 1.5 million units sold, the new Fiat 500 hasn’t grown in size, but instead has grown in maturity with advanced technologies, improved efficiency, even more customisation ideas and a Centro Stile Fiat-refreshed exterior and interior.

The interior of the Fiat 500 has undergone a major update, offering FCA’s award-winning Uconnect system for the first time, with its five-inch touchscreen taking pride of place in the dash. The unit is not only easier to read and more intuitive to use, it also improves connectivity and functionality with steering wheel-mounted audio controls and USB / Aux-in ports plus Bluetooth with streaming functionality on all models.

The Uconnect 5-inch system is a touchscreen unit complete with Bluetooth hands-free calling and music streaming, DAB+ digital radio, voice recognition and an SMS reader for reading text messages received on compatible telephones. For added safety and convenience, the Uconnect system can be operated via a new steering wheel which features new audio control buttons which are easier to operate and, thanks to their chrome-plated edging and high-quality materials, more pleasant to touch and to behold.

Further enhancing the Fiat 500’s on-board technology, the Lounge model l is also equipped with a crisp, seven-inch TFT digital display, developed in collaboration with Magneti Marelli – the international leader in the design and manufacturer of high-tech automotive systems and components.

The Fiat 500’s updated exterior design retains the “face” of its predecessors, but its iconic circular headlights now adopt innovative polyellptical modules for improved night vision and extra safety. The bonnet retains its distinctive, traditional clamshell form, another nod to its legendary predecessor, while the trapezoidal nose gets more pronounced ribbing and the auxiliary air vent is now fed via a three-dimensional grille (with chrome-effect buttons on the Lounge version) flanked by chrome brightwork to give the new Fiat 500 a stronger visual presence.

New ’empty’ light clusters, comprised of ring-shaped structures with body-coloured centres, define the revised look of the rear, with the fog light and reversing light relocated to the edges of the redesigned bumper trim to improve safety by separating illumination functions.

“There are few cars quite as iconic as Fiat’s legendary Cinquecento, and the 2016 model continues that proud legacy, while adding a host of technology and luxuries aimed at making the driving experience even better,” said FCA Australia President and CEO, Pat Dougherty.

“With more technology, more customisation options and a revised style that stays true to its retro roots, the new Fiat 500 is guaranteed to put a smile on the faces of drivers and passengers alike.

“There is simply nothing else like it.”

The Fiat 500 will be available in two well-equipped trim levels in Australia – Pop and Lounge – and available as a hatchback or convertible.

The Fiat 500 is priced from just $18,000 (MSRP) for the Pop, and $21,000 (MSRP) for the Lounge. Further enhancing the value proposition, FCA Australia has introduced a introductory $1000 drive-away offer across the 500 range, meaning the Fiat 500 Pop begins from just $19,000 drive-away, while the well-equipped Lounge is priced from just $22,000 drive-away.

The Fiat 500 Pop is equipped with Fiat’s 1.2-litre, four-cylinder petrol engine which produces 51kW and 102Nm, and paired with either a five-speed manual or five-speed Dualogic transmission. One of Australia’s most economical petrol engines, the Fiat 500 Pop sips a combined 4.8-litres per hundred kilometres (4.9 in manual guise).

The Fiat 500 Lounge is now powered by Fiat’s 1.4-litre, four-cylinder petrol engine, which produces 74kW and 131Nm and is paired with either a six-speed manual transmission or a five-speed Dualogic transmission.
