Ford Mustang Becomes Instant Sales Halo

Mustang Becomes Instant Sales Halo for Ford Lineup, Gets Even More Innovations with SYNC 3

  • Ford is investing in Australia like no other automaker with $2 billion in R&D the past six years and even more to launch a record number of products, including five performance vehicles led by the globally iconic Mustang, now the Halo vehicle of Ford Australia’s range.
  • Among the public, Mustang holds the highest favourable opinion of any of Ford’s volume nameplates. Demand is now so strong, 2000 extra Mustangs are heading to Australian shores.
  • 2017MY Mustangs to be loaded with SYNC 3, the latest in technology and connectivity. Featuring Apple Carplay, Android Auto and Ford Applink 3.0, SYNC 3 offers increased functionality and improved responsiveness.
  • 2017MY Mustangs available in three stunning new colours set to turn other drivers green with envy; Lightning Blue (Prestige), Grabber Blue and White Platinum Tri-Coat (Prestige). Can they overtake Australia’s most popular Mustang colour, Race Red?
  • Australian drivers drawn to EcoBoost engines, as many customers are exposed to them for the first time via the Mustang, with 40% of Mustang convertibles sold in February coming with an Ecoboost under the hood.
MELBOURNE, APRIL 04, 2016 – Mustang has become an instant sales halo for Ford Australia, and among the public, holds the highest favorable opinion of any of Ford’s volume nameplates. It’s the latest example of how Ford’s commitment to Australia continues to grow beyond its investment in local R&D, which has seen $2 billion invested over the past six years.

Demand is so strong, 2000 extra Mustangs are now bound for Australia and due to arrive towards the end of 2016.

The exciting development, which proves you can never have too much of a good thing, is great news for the thousands of Australian Mustang customers eagerly awaiting the vehicle, which has surpassed 2016 sales predictions, with 1500 more orders placed than expected.

‘The 2000 extra Mustangs heading for Australian shores demonstrates the excitement around the vehicle, and it validates Ford Australia’s commitment to invest in expanding our performance vehicle line-up to five models this year,’ says Graeme Whickman, President and CEO, Ford of Australia.

The success of Mustang coincides with a strong start to the year for Ford Australia, with sales up 17.2% on the same time last year. While Mustang was the number one selling sports car under $80,000 in the country during January and February, the good news flowed into other segments.

‘Our Australian design and engineering teams played a large role in the development of Ranger and we’re glad to say the Ranger 4X4 is Australia’s top selling truck so far this year, with 19% of the market compared to the Hilux 4X4 on 18.5%. Our kid ready Ford Kuga is up 51% year-on-year, while Mondeo sales are up 427.9% on this time last year,’ Whickman noted.

It’s also an exciting time for advanced Ford technology like EcoBoost, with Australians drawn to the engine in their droves, many exposed to them for the first time via the Mustang. Infact, 40% of all Mustang Convertibles sold in February came with an EcoBoost under the hood.

“Mustang has a bigger role as a flagship for innovations such as EcoBoost engine technology that we offer on other vehicles such as Focus and the Ford Kuga SUV to give customers a great blend of fuel economy and efficiency,” added Whickman.

The 2017MY Mustang Loaded with SYNC 3 Technology

In June, 2016, production of Mustang will roll over to 2017MY. Along with the new Model Year there will be some exciting product changes.

Both 2017MY Mustang EcoBoost and GT models will be loaded with SYNC 3, which features Apple Carplay, Android Auto and Ford Applink 3.0. SYNC 3 offers increased functionality and improved responsiveness, making a drive in a Mustang an even more memorable experience.

All Mustang vehicles built from June, 2016, will come standard with SYNC 3, and EcoBoost models will come with a spare wheel. If that wasn’t enough, there will not be any pricing difference for this product change, which represents a value add for customers.

A 19” steel spare wheel & tyre is unavailable on Mustang GT due the fitment of Brembo brakes.

    Exciting New Colours:

2017MY EcoBoost and GT Mustangs will be available in three stunning new colours set to turn all other drivers green with envy; Lightning Blue (Prestige), Grabber Blue and White Platinum Tri-Coat (Prestige).

The only question that remains is whether they will overtake Australia’s most popular Mustang colour, Race Red.

With the introduction of these new colours, some colours available on 2016MY Mustangs will be retired, including Deep Impact Blue (Prestige), Competition Orange (Prestige), Guard (Prestige).

    Ford’s Commitment to Australia:

Ford is investing more in Australia than any other auto-maker, including $2 billion in local R&D over the past six years. It will be the largest auto-company in Australia by 2017.

Australia’s love affair with the Mustang and the arrival of 2000 extra vehicles comes hot on the heels of the recent launch of the Falcon Sprint and is all part of Ford Australia’s strategy to put more Australians behind-the-wheel of five world-class performance vehicles in 2016, which also includes Fiesta ST, Focus ST, and the upcoming Focus RS.

Ford Falcon XR Sprint Series

Published

Ford Falcon Sprint

Ford’s Asia-Pacific Product Development team based at Campbellfield in Melbourne has worked its magic on the performance Ford falcon XR6 Sprint and XR8 Sprint series sedans.

  • Performance of the XR Sprint Series matched by the braking and grip levels afforded a high-performance sedan

  • High performance Pirelli P-Zero tyres as well as ride and handling improvements caters to the enthusiast customer

  • This work builds on Ford’s Australian investment of $2 billion in the past six years, including $300 million in R&D invested in 2015 alone

Apart from significant suspension improvements, the limited-edition cars will be shod with special rubber when they hit the road in May.

The Product Development team, working with Pirelli Tyres, has managed to introduce the highperformance
P-Zero tyre to match the vehicles’ dynamic capability, which not only improves handling but also reduces braking distances.

The Sprint XR6 and Sprint XR8 have undergone significant suspension development to ensure the performance of the vehicles was matched by the braking and grip levels afforded by a highperformance
sedan expected by an enthusiast customer.

“Customers will certainly notice the difference,” according to Vehicle Line Director of Falcon and Territory, David Wilkinson. “All Fords are renowned for their dynamic DNA – from steering to ride and handling – and with the XR Sprint series our enthusiast customers will experience a number of improvements first-hand. The ride and steering response has improved and the cars feel more agile and can easily be adjusted mid-corner.”

As well, the new performance Brembo brake package has been confirmed as a premium sixpiston (front) and four-piston (rear) setup in a unique gold colour.

Ford’s sports XR Falcon sedan is already acclaimed as one of the finest handling large sedans available but when the opportunity came to develop the XR Sprint series it provided an chance to take the existing car and further improve its dynamic capability.

When the development team started work on the Sprint series, developing a wider rear tyre option was considered essential; and combined with a move to Pirelli P-Zero sports tyres on both XR8 Sprint and XR6 Sprint, the baseline grip available has been substantially improved without compromising ride quality.

Suspension changes were then incorporated to take advantage of these new grip levels.

XR8 Sprint suspension improvements have:

– Improved ride
– Provided sharper handling
– Increased grip levels
– Improved braking performance and cornering stability
– Reduced understeer
– Increased body control
– Improved balance

XR6 Sprint suspension improvements have:

– Provided sportier ride
– Provided sharper handling
– Increased grip levels
– Improved braking performance and cornering stability
– Reduced understeer
– Increased body control
– Improved balance versus XR6 Turbo

The Pirelli tyres are 245/35 R19 Tyres (front) and 265/35 R19 (rear). The XR Sprint series will also come with a full-size alloy spare (245/35 R19).

At the core of the Sprint are two proven engines, Ford’s turbocharged 4.0 in-line six cylinder and acclaimed Supercharged 5.0-litre V8.

The XR8 Sprint will be powered by a bespoke Sprint calibrated version of Ford’s 5.0-litre Supercharged V8 that develops 345 kW @ 5,750 rpm and 575 Nm @ 2,220-6,250 rpm*. The XR6 Sprint is also a performance powerhouse, developing 325 kW @ 6,000 rpm and 576 Nm @ 2,750 rpm*.

*Performance data measured using premium fuel 95-98 RON
