Priced from $37,900 for the entry-level Cooper model with the Cooper S starting at $45,400, both models of the new MINI Convertible are highly specified reflecting their premium status in the compact market.
Standard features include six-speed automatic transmissions, 16-inch and 17-inch alloy wheels respectively, dual zone climate control, dynamic cruise control, three-spoke sports leather multifunction steering wheel, MINI Visual Boost multimedia system with 6.5-inch screen and full Bluetooth and USB connectivity.
A full complement of safety equipment adds Rear View Camera with guidance lines, rear Park Distance Control, DSC, fully integrated rollover protection system, four airbags and automatic Rain Sensor windscreen wipers and lights.
On top of this, the MINI Cooper S Convertible gains sports front seats, a John Cooper Works leather steering wheel, cloth/leather upholstery, MINI Navigation System, MINI Driving Modes and LED headlights.
The sharp pricing and increased equipment levels represent a significant improvement in value with prices reduced by 11 per cent compared with the previous generation MINI Cabrio models.
Tony Sesto, General Manager of MINI Australia, said the improved value equation, together with the new MINI Convertible’s increased interior space and greater performance and efficiency levels would ensure the car remained the benchmark for compact premium open top motoring fun.
“Building on the underpinnings of the latest generation MINI hatch, the new MINI Convertible combines trademark MINI levels of performance and driving dynamics and distinctive contemporary style with a larger and more comfortable cabin and the thrill of open top driving,” Mr Sesto said.
“And when you add in the higher levels of premium equipment for comfort, safety and convenience and lower prices, the new MINI Convertible offers outstanding value as well.” The characteristic design of the new MINI Convertible maintains its unique combination of elegance and sporty flair with a proportional increase in all dimensions giving the car a more substantial and stylish presence.
Overall length has been increased by 98mm, width by 44mm, with a marginal increase of 1mm in height compared to the previous generation MINI Cabrio, which together with the new high quality fully electric automatic soft top provides the MINI Convertible with a dynamic aesthetic whether the roof is open or closed.
The new soft top, with its integrated sunroof function, offers a quieter, more refined operation and can be opened and closed using the button on the remote control when stationary or at speeds of up to 30km/h via the toggle switch on the roof frame.
Inside, the MINI Convertible maintains its stylish, premium feel with the car’s increased size offering substantially more passenger space for the four occupants as well as greater luggage capacity.
Rear passengers, in particular, benefit from 36mm more kneeroom while the luggage capacity has been increased by 45 litres to 215 litres with the roof closed, which can be further extended courtesy of the standard 50/50 split fold rear seat backs.
Under the bonnet driving the front wheels, the new MINI Convertible is powered by the latest generation TwinPower Turbo petrol engines that generate more power and torque than their predecessors along with reduced fuel consumption and emissions.
Powering the MINI Cooper Convertible is a 100kW/220Nm 1.5-litre three-cylinder engine that drives through a six-speed automatic transmission enabling the car to cover 0-100km/h in 8.7 seconds. At the same time, fuel consumption on the combined cycle test is just 5.3l/100km with CO2 emissions of 124g/km.
As the sportier model, the Cooper S uses a larger 2.0-litre four-cylinder TwinPower Turbo engine that generates a maximum power of 141kW and peak torque of 280Nm driving through a six-speed sports automatic with gearshift paddles giving the car a 0-100km/h time of 7.1 seconds. Combined cycle fuel consumption is 5.8l/100km with CO2 emissions of 135g/km.
Combining a highly rigid body structure with model-specific bracing elements, MINI’s proven single-joint McPherson strut front and multilink rear suspension, and tight and responsive Servotronic Electric Power Steering, the MINI Cooper Convertible delivers MINI’s trademark dynamic responsiveness.
Furthering this, the Cooper S is fitted standard with the MINI Driving Modes feature with SPORT, MID and GREEN modes that automatically adjust throttle, steering and gearshift responses and actions according to driver preferences.
MINI service and selected maintenance costs can now be covered by a single, one-off advance payment with MINI Service Inclusive. MINI Convertible in detail
Exterior Design – an evolution in classic MINI sporty elegance
The exterior design of the new MINI Convertible, while being 98mm longer and 44mm wider, retains the elegant proportions and sporty characteristics that have made the MINI a modern design classic.
At the front, its distinctive large circular headlights and hexagonal grille – both framed with chrome trim – present a classic MINI face with the sports flavour of the Cooper S enhanced by the large air intake, bonnet scoop and brake air ducts.
Viewed from the side, the MINI Convertible presents a solid profile thanks to its short overhangs and chrome band that extends along the shoulder line with the car’s elongated silhouette further accentuated when the soft top is lowered and neatly stored behind the rear seats.
This sleek visage is aided by replacing the previous solid rollover hoops with a new fully integrated “invisible” rollover protection system that automatically raises the bars when the car’s safety sensors detect the risk of a rollover.
The large chrome vertically-oriented tail lights with chrome surrounds are positioned on the outer edges of the car’s rear to emphasise its low, wide stance with the sporty Cooper S defined by its central twin tailpipes finished in chrome and integrated diffuser in the rear bumper.
Complementing the new MINI Convertible’s larger dimensions is a new textile soft top roof with a heated rear window and optimised acoustic insulation that is now fully electrically operated for smoother and quieter operation.
The roof can be fully lowered or raised in about 18 seconds via the toggle switch on the front roof frame at speeds of up to 30km/h or via the button on the remote control key fob when stationary. As well as full open top driving, it also offers a sunroof function that allows the front section of the roof to retract to any position, providing an opening of up to 40cm.
The standard roof is made of a high quality black fabric but in a nod to its British origins, it is also available with an integrated woven graphic featuring a black and grey Union Jack motif as an option.
Like all MINIs, the Convertible is available with a range of exterior personalisation options and for additional identification that leaves no doubt as to the brand, all models also feature as standard, a projection of the MINI logo onto the ground from the driver’s side exterior mirror when the car is unlocked.
The MINI Convertible is available in a range of 10 metallic and four solid colours including the new Caribbean Aqua.
Interior Design – increased space and quality finish for superb comfort and style
Inside, the MINI Convertible maintains the brand’s characteristic styling with its strong horizontal instrument panel punctuated by trademark MINI circular dials, air vents and trim elements.
Together with the high quality fit and finish and premium materials, the increased dimensions of the new MINI Convertible offer greater comfort for all four occupants with a significantly enlarged interior space.
This is particularly evident in the two rear individual seats where occupants are provided with a 36mm increase in kneeroom and shoulder room, 112mm increase in elbow room, larger seat surfaces and more headroom.
With an extended adjustment range for the front seats, passengers also benefit from easier and more convenient entry and exit into the rear seats.
The larger dimensions of the new MINI Convertible have also increased luggage space with an extra 45 litres capacity increasing the total to 215 litres with the soft top roof closed or 160 litres in open top driving mode.
Providing easy access to the boot, the rear tailgate opens downwards and can support a weight of up to 80kg with the luggage space fitted with an Easy Load function that raises and locks the soft top frame when the roof is closed to enable stowage of larger luggage items.
Luggage space can be further expanded courtesy of the 50/50-split fold rear seat backs and thanks to the new model’s increased width, the load-through facility has been widened by 8mm to 734mm.
Further generous storage for smaller items is located throughout the cabin of the MINI Convertible with cupholders in the front and rear and large door bins capable of holding up to 1.5-litre bottles.
As a premium compact soft top, the new MINI Cooper Convertible provides a high quality interior ambience heralded by the three-spoke leather trimmed multifunction steering wheel, LED lights package providing mood lighting in a range of colours, cloth Firework upholstery and an interior trim colour scheme combining Hazy Grey and Piano Black highlights.
Emphasising its sports performance, the MINI Cooper S Convertible features big-bolstered sports front seats with a cloth/leather Diamond Carbon Black upholstery, a three-spoke John Cooper Works multifunction steering wheel with gearshift paddles and contrast red stitching for the leather wrap, and Black Chequered trim highlights.
Both models are also available with a range of trim and upholstery options including the new Chester variant that features Malt Brown leather finished in a diamond pattern with contrast piping.
Powertrain – TwinPower Turbo technologies deliver greater performance and efficiency
Powering the new MINI Convertible are the latest generation three and four-cylinder TwinPower Turbo engines that not only provide more power and torque than their predecessors for greater performance, but thanks to MINIMALISM technologies, also offer improved fuel consumption and lower emissions.
As the more sporty of the pair, the MINI Cooper S features a 2.0-litre four-cylinder TwinPower Turbo petrol engine that combines direct injection, and fully variable valve and camshaft control to generate a maximum power of 141kW from 5000rpm to 6500rpm and peak torque of 280Nm between 1250rpm and 4000rpm, with 300Nm available on overboost. This represents an increase of 6kW and 40Nm compared with the previous generation MINI Cooper S Cabrio.
Driving the front wheels, the engine is mated to an updated six-speed sports automatic transmission offering smooth, fast gear changes with steering wheel mounted gearshift paddles for manual mode and a Launch Control function for optimised acceleration off the line.
This advanced and refined powertrain enables the MINI Cooper S Convertible to cover 0-100km/h in 7.1 seconds before going on to a top speed of 228km/h.
Through the application of weight reduction features and optimisation of aerodynamics, in addition to extensive MINIMALISM technologies including Auto Start/Stop, Brake Energy Regeneration, shift point display and needs-oriented control of ancillary pumps and components, the MINI Cooper S Convertible also delivers superb efficiency.
On the combined cycle test, it returns a fuel consumption figure of 5.8l/100km – 1.0l/100km less than previous generation engine – with CO2 emissions of 135g/km ensuring it meets the latest Euro6 emission standards.
The MINI Cooper Convertible is powered by the brand’s innovative lightweight 1.5-litre three-cylinder TwinPower Turbo petrol engine that generates a maximum 100kW of power at 4400rpm and a peak torque of 220Nm – with 230Nm available on overboost – on tap from 1250rpm.
Combined with the more efficient updated six-speed automatic transmission, this powertrain offers significantly more tractable power than its predecessor with a 0-100km/h time of 8.7 seconds – a full 2.4 seconds faster – and a top speed of 206km/h.
This increased acceleration comes not only from the increased power of 10kW and 60Nm more torque but the fact that the peak torque is available much lower in the rev band.
At the same time, the MINI Cooper Convertible makes use of the same MINIMALISM technologies as its sibling with a reduction in fuel consumption compared to the previous Cooper Cabrio of 1.6l/100km resulting in a combined test result of 5.3l/100km and CO2 emissions of 124g/km.
Dynamics – structure and suspension optimised for MINI go-kart driving enjoyment
MINI has garnered a tremendous reputation for the driving fun and go-kart-like handling of its cars and in that regard, the new MINI Convertible continues to deliver.
To compensate for the lack of a solid roof, the Convertible models feature bespoke body strengthening features with additional torsion struts under the front and rear, a stiffening plate beneath the engine and optimised stiffening for the side sills to provide a lightweight torsionally-rigid body essential for its agile and stable driving characteristics.
The stiff bodyshell is complemented by the proven front strut and rear multilink suspension that has been tuned specifically for the Convertible to ensure an optimal balance between sporty driving fun and ride comfort.
An integral part of the MINI’s characteristic dynamic handling comes from its Servotronic electromechanical power steering system that automatically adjusts steering assistance according to vehicle speed providing maximum agility at higher speeds and comfortable manoeuvring at parking speeds.
Delivering superb stopping power, the MINI Convertible is fitted with large disc brakes all round that are vented at the front.
A full complement of safety assistance systems including Dynamic Stability Control with Anti-Lock Braking System, Cornering Brake Control, Dynamic Traction Control, Electronic Differential Lock Control, Dry Braking function and Fading Compensation assist in providing outstanding and safe driving enjoyment.
Further optimisation of driving control is offered in the MINI Cooper S Convertible thanks to its driver selectable MINI Driving Modes that offers three settings – SPORT, MID and GREEN – that automatically adjust throttle control and steering and gear shift responses according to driver preferences.
Dynamic Damper Control using automatically adjustable dampers is optionally available for both models while in GREEN mode, a coasting function also decouples the drivetrain at speeds of between 50km/h and 160km/h when the driver lifts their foot off the accelerator pedal, to improve efficiency.
To ensure optimal grip and ride comfort, the MINI Cooper Convertible is fitted with 16-inch Loop Spoke alloy wheels wrapped with 195/55 tyres with the sportier Cooper S featuring 17-inch Tentacle Spoke alloys with lower profile 205/45 tyres.
Comfort and convenience – premium features set a high benchmark
As a premium compact car, the MINI Convertible is very well equipped for comfort and convenience with standard features including dual zone climate control, dynamic cruise control with braking function, electric windows and exterior mirrors, remote central locking with keyless start/stop switch, automatic Rain Sensor windscreen wipers and lights, and front and rear fog lights.
For supreme safety, both MINI Convertible models also feature front and side airbags, Rear View Camera with guidelines, rear Park Distance Control and ISOFIX child restraint anchorages as standard.
Providing full communication and entertainment options is the MINI Visual Boost multimedia system with a 6.5-inch display screen incorporating Bluetooth, USB and auxiliary connectivity and a unique Always Open Timer that monitors and records the time spent enjoying open top driving.
In addition to this extensive list of standard equipment, the MINI Cooper S Convertible also gains LED headlights, daytime running lights and front fog lights, and MINI Navigation System.
Both models are also available with a number of optional features including Head-Up Display, camera-based Driving Assistant Package with active cruise control, Park Assist including front Park Distance Control, Adaptive headlights, upgraded Navigation System Professional with a larger 8.8-inch monitor, 20GB hard drive and voice control, and a premium Harman/Kardon 12-speaker audio system.
