Refreshed style and new technologies for upgraded 2017 Kia Cerato –

  • Updated exterior and interior styling for Cerato hatch and sedan
  • New technologies improve comfort, convenience and safety
  • Greater driver involvement with new Drive Mode Select system
  • Further enhancement for local ride and handling package

New style, new comfort, new technology _ but the same razor sharp pricing, industry leading 7-year warranty and ownership peace of mind. That’s the story with the arrival of Kia’s updated 2017 Cerato.

Cerato has been one of Kia’s most successful global models with more than 3 million sales.

“For Kia Motors Australia, Cerato is a key plank in our sales strategy and a leader for the sub-$20,000 pricing structure of our small car garage,” Kia Motors Australia’s Chief Operating Officer, Damien Meredith, said.

“With a drive-away price of $19,990 for the S with auto, Cerato represents outstanding value, and that equation is only enhanced by the security and peace of mind of a 7-year warranty, 7-year capped price servicing and 7-year roadside assist.”

Mr Meredith said the widely-praised Cerato was just one of the steps through the Kia consideration family which starts with the $14,990 Picanto, moves on to the $16,990 Rio and then to the Cerato.

“Cerato’s place in the Kia family is unquestioned and with the improvements the model upgrade brings, it presents a truly compelling argument for value, safety, quality and practicality.”

Cerato will be available in Australian in two body styles _ four-door sedan and five-door hatch, and four grades _ S, S Premium, Si and SLi.

The Cerato range will feature a single 2.0-litre MPI engine from the proven NU family coupled to a six-speed manual in the S grade models and a six-speed automatic across all four grades.

With drive-away pricing from launch the S manual and auto will be $19,990 with an offer of free automatic. With the optional audio visual unit _ which brings rear view camera, Android Auto and dusk sensing headlights _ the S will be $20,490.

The S Premium is priced from $24,990 drive away with automatic, Si is $28,990 drive away and the range-topping SLi is drive away at $32,490.

Standard equipment levels across the grades are typical of Kia’s philosophy of no compromise on safety and value-added inclusions for comfort and convenience.

All models get standard six airbags, anti-lock brakes (ABS) with Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD) and Brake Assist (BA), Electronic Stability Control (ESC) with Traction Control System (TCS), Hill start Assist Control (HAC), and Kia’s Vehicle Stability Management (VSM) system.

The Si adds Blind Spot Detection (BSD) with Lane Change Assist (LCA) and Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA) while SLi goes a step further with Lane Departure Warning (LDWS) and Forward Collision Warning (FCW) systems.

Standard fare in the S includes 16-inch steel wheels with a full size spare, power windows, projector headlights, 3.5-inch TFT LCD instrument cluster, cruise control, front and rear parking sensors, keyless entry, adjustable headrests, 60:40 split fold rear seats; Bluetooth phone and streaming and FM/AM radio with CD and MP3 audio. The head unit can be upgraded to include a 7-inch touch screen audio visual unit with reversing camera, Android Auto connection, dusk sensing headlights in a $500 option pack.

The S Premium adds 16-inch alloys with full size alloy spare, dusk sensing headlights, 7-inch LCD touch screen with satellite navigation and rear view camera, along with additional soft-touch interior surfaces.

Moving to the Si adds leather trim seats, rear air vents, auto up and down front windows, smart key with push button start, electric folding mirrors, illuminated vanity mirrors, chrome accent on exterior door handles and window surrounds, aeroblade wipers, Blind Spot Detection with Lane Change Assist and Rear Cross Traffic Alert.

At the top of the range the SLi features 17-inch alloy wheels with full size alloy spare, alloy sport pedals, paddle shifters, dual-zone climate control, LED DRLs, eight-way power driver’s seat adjustment, heated and ventilated driver’s seat and heated passenger seat, sunroof, HID headlights, Lane Departure Warning and Forward Collision Warning.

All models fitted with the 7-inch audio visual and satellite navigation screen are hardware compatible with Android Auto and Apple Carplay and can be software flashed when licensing agreements are in place.

Modernized exterior styling

Originally created at Kia’s USA Design Centre in Irvine, California, the updated Cerato benefits from a new, more modern look that emphasizes the ‘dynamic muscularity’ of the car, while retaining its low coupe-like roofline, sleek silhouette and cab-forward styling.

Both sedan and hatchback models get a refresh on the front end with updated black or gloss black trim for Kia’s signature ‘tiger-nose’ grille, as well as newly-designed headlamps, bumper and fog-lamps, and a re-profiled hood. Sedan models also receive a new rear bumper and tail-light design.

The Cerato sedan’s dimensions remain the same (4560mm long with 2700mm wheelbase, 1780mm wide, and 1435mm high), offering buyers ample interior space, high levels of practicality, and the same sporty appearance.

The hatch also retains the same dimensions from the current model with a length of 4350mm, wheelbase of 2700mm, width of 1780mm and height of 1450mm.

The Cerato is available in a single non-premium Clear White colour with seven premium options _ Aurora Black, Gravity Blue, Planet Blue, Snow White Pearl, Metal Stream, Silky Silver and Temptation Red.

New materials and colours for revised cabin

Every model in the new Kia Cerato line-up has received a range of updates to the interior to create a more premium ambience.

Kia’s interior designers have introduced new materials to the dashboard and door trims, as well as to the centre fascia and console hood. The overhead console has a built-in sunglass case, while new metallic trim around the air vents adds to the more modern appearance.

The gearstick has been redesigned for a higher quality look and feel, as well as improving comfort when actuating shifts.

The cabins of the upgraded Cerato sedan and hatchback are available in two seat trims, a black leather-trim in Si and SLi grades and a stylish hard-wearing black cloth treatment for S and S Premium.

For SLi buyers the driver’s seat is heated and ventilated while the passenger will enjoy the comfort of a heated seat.

New technologies improve safety, driver enjoyment and cabin comfort

Upgrades to the 2017 Kia Cerato go beyond visual modifications, with a range of new technologies to improve safety, convenience, comfort and driver enjoyment on the various grades.

Sedan and hatchback models in Si trim will receive Blind Spot Detection with Lane Change Assist and Rear Cross Traffic Alert while the SLi models will add Lane Departure Warning and Forward Collision Warning.

Blind Spot Detection (BSD) monitors cars behind the Cerato and provides drivers with both and audible warning and a visual warning in the door mirror when another vehicle enters the driver’s blind spot. BSD has been designed to improve safety during high-speed driving, where frequent lane changes either side of the car can increase the potential for an accidental collision.

Across the model range all Cerato will feature Kia’s extensive safety pack with Anti-lock Brakes System, Electronic Stability Control, Hill Assist Control, Vehicle Stability Management suite and Emergency Stop Signal.

There are six airbags across the range with front and rear parking sensors standard. S Premium, Si and SLi grades will have a standard reversing camera while the AV unit and camera are optional on the S model.

Improved suspension suited to Australian conditions

Already tuned for Australian roads, the new Cerato has been further improved through an extensive re-visiting of suspension by Kia Motors Australia’s bespoke tuning program.

Guided by suspension guru Graeme Gambold, the KMAu team has turned thousands of local testing kilometres into revised front springs _ stiffer to improve balance between ride comfort and handling while inspiring confidence on higher speed roads _ and improved damper compliance.

The upgraded damper valving technology _ featuring square orifice pistons _ allowed for more focused local tuning resulting in greatly improved ride quality without sacrificing handling precision.

Improvements to the Cerato’s column mounted Motor Driven Power Steering (C-MDPS) comprised revised steering tuning and improved hardware to refine weight, feel and confidence for the driver.

An upgrade to the steering motor, a more powerful ECU (up from 16bit to 32bit) offering improved motor control and logic control cycle, and increased stiffness in the column shaft, bushings and steering gear all add up to better connection between the driver and the road.

All automatic models will have the benefit of Kia’s Drive Mode Select system which features three modes of steering engagement _ Normal, Eco and Sport.

2.0-litre four-cylinder engine and six-speed transmissions

The 2017 Kia Cerato is available with a single highly-efficient four-cylinder MPI engine from the NU family, coupled to either a six-speed manual (S) or six-speed automatic (S, S Premium, Si and SLi) driving through the front wheels.

The 112kW and 192Nm power plant is Euro IV compliant and returns fuel efficiency of 7.1L/100km for hatch and sedan in both manual and automatic on the combined cycle.

Utilising the weight saving of cylinder blocks and heads made of cast aluminum, the multi-point injection technology of the NU engines aids in producing low emissions and high efficiency.

The upgrades to the third-generation Cerato are all targeted at improving safety, comfort, convenience, and driver enjoyment.

The changes will boost the model’s appeal in a highly-competitive C-segment, and reinforce its position as one of Kia’s biggest-selling export models. The Cerato is manufactured at Kia’s Hwasung facility in Korea.
